People say it looked thicker in the shop. Then they put it on tile with nothing under it, or they buy a rug that crawls toward the sofa. The complaint is rarely the colour. It is the floor moving. Or the edge sitting up at the door. Or dust that never quite leaves the pile.

Underlay is the quiet half of a stretch-fit. Without it you feel every tile lip. With the wrong one, the carpet still waves when the AC cycles. You cannot judge that from a hand sample. You judge it in the room, vents on.

Dust is the other neighbour. A Jumeirah villa with a garden door, and a Marina tower apartment with a long corridor, both bring grit. Wall-to-wall you vacuum to the skirting. A rug with a fringe collects it. Neither is wrong. The room has to pick.

A Jumeirah villa living room is usually several thresholds, a majlis next door, and stairs people want to match. The floor wants to run. Stop it with a rug in the middle of marble and heels catch the edge. Guests feel it. You feel it at 11pm walking to the kitchen.

A Marina tower apartment is usually existing tile, a smaller rectangle, and a building that cares about access. Some families want wall-to-wall because the bedroom echoes and the neighbour downstairs hears every step. Some want a rug they can take when they move. That split is real. The messy bit is the room that is already full. Sofa in place. Wardrobe too heavy. Kids' stuff along the wall. Stretch-fit wants the floor clear.
