Majlis Interior Design in Dubai: Carpet and Curtains Before the Sofa

Buy the sofa last. A Dubai majlis works when carpet, curtains, and the path guests walk are planned together. Seating is the last piece.

Arabic majlis carpet in a Dubai villa reception room

The brief we hear most in a Dubai villa is not “traditional or modern.” It is this: the sofa is already on the way, the windows are bare, and the floor is still tile. Guests will sit here next month. The room does not know that yet.

A majlis is the room you receive in. In the Gulf that means tea, qahwa, and a long conversation, not a living room that photographs well empty. Carpet, curtains, and the path from the door have to be decided together. The seating is the last piece, not the first.

Mohammad Decor has fitted these rooms as a family. We supply and install. We do not publish a rate card. WhatsApp +971 52 544 4028 for a free visit.

What goes wrong when the sofa arrives first

A villa majlis in Dubai has three hard neighbours: west sun, air conditioning, and incense.

West-facing glass cooks the room in the afternoon. Thin curtains do not save the fabric on the back of a new sofa. They also fail at privacy when the next plot is close. A made-to-measure curtain, with lining chosen for that wall, is not decoration. It is how the room stays usable after 4pm.

AC that blows on the seating line is the other quiet failure. People shift, cushions migrate, and nobody can say why the room feels tense. Layout has to leave the airflow alone. You only see that on site.

Incense and qahwa are not optional in a real majlis. They yellow pale textiles and they live in pile. A short, hard carpet that looked clean in a shop goes patchy. A deeper Arabic pile with proper underlay hides daily use and keeps voices in the room instead of bouncing off tile.

None of that is a sofa problem. It is a floor-and-window problem that the sofa then has to live with.

Floor seating or sofas: decide how you host

Search will show you Arabic majlis sofas, floor seating, and furniture packages. Those are products. The room still needs a decision about how the family actually sits.

Floor seating along three walls (a U, or a diwan line) holds more guests and reads as a formal majlis. It needs a floor you can sit on for hours: wall-to-wall carpet, dense underlay, no ridge at the door, no rug that crawls. Built-in benches or a raised platform are joinery. We will say so if that sits outside a carpet-and-curtain brief.

Sofa majlis (L-shape, facing pairs, or a loose U of pieces) is easier for mixed hosting, and for houses that also live in the room on ordinary evenings. The carpet still has to run to the walls, or the rug has to be sized so heels and coffee tables do not catch the edge. A small rug in a large room is a trip, not a majlis.

You can mix them. You cannot split the difference and hope. Pick how the largest gathering sits. Then buy the floor and the windows. Then the seating.

Carpet, curtains, and the path from the door

Treat the three as one job.

The path. Guests enter, greet, and sit. Honorific places should not stare into glare or sit under a vent. Tea service needs a clear run that does not cut through knees. That is layout. It takes a tape and a floor plan. It saves you moving a sofa twice.

The floor. Indoor majlis rooms in Dubai usually want wall-to-wall carpet: stretch-fit, underlay, clean thresholds. Pattern and pile are chosen in the room, not from a phone photo, because coastal light and inland light are not the same colour. Arabic geometric borders belong when the family wants them. A quieter wall-to-wall belongs when the seating and the curtains will carry the colour. We bring books. You sit on them.

The windows. A majlis without a curtain layer is a fishbowl in late afternoon. Sheers for day. A heavier, lined cloth for privacy and heat. Tracks set high and wide enough that stacked fabric does not eat the glass. Motorised tracks earn their keep on tall villa openings, not on a small apartment window. We measure drops on site. Photos get an indicative range. They do not get a firm drop.

If you already bought a sofa, we can still do this. We measure around what you have, say what the floor and windows need, and we will not pretend a wrong-sized rug will save the room.

If the majlis opens to a courtyard

Indoor carpet and outdoor turf are different jobs. A courtyard-linked seating zone, or a room that sits outside the AC line, often wants UV-stable artificial grass rather than a carpet that will bake. We compared those in Artificial Grass vs Real Grass in Dubai. This post is the indoor room: pile, lining, and how people sit.

Do not run one material across both zones to match. The join at the threshold is the detail. Measure both. Quote both.

How a visit actually works

Send room photos, approximate size, and how you receive (floor seating, sofas, or both) on WhatsApp. That is enough to know whether this is a carpet-and-curtain majlis or a larger fit-out.

Then a free visit. We measure walls, drops, and the door swing. We look at the sun and the vents. If you can come to Dragon Mart Complex 2, Shop G-C-22, you can feel pile and cloth under real light. If you cannot, we bring samples to the villa.

You get a supply-and-install quote on WhatsApp after that measurement. Not before. Same family crew. The people who quote also fit the carpet and hang the curtains.

If the room has to host next month, start with the floor and the windows. Message us. We will tell you what to buy last.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this a full renovation?
No. Many majlis jobs are carpet, underlay, curtains, and a seating plan. Gypsum, platforms, and marble are a different crew. We will say so.
Can you use a sofa I already ordered?
Yes. Send the dimensions with the photos. The floor and the windows still have to be right, or the piece will look stranded.
Do you do Arabic floor seating?
Yes, when the floor is specified for it. Wall-to-wall carpet and underlay first. Platforms and carving are not a WhatsApp guess.
Do you show prices on this page?
No. Pile, underlay, drops, lining, and access change the number. Photos get a range. The firm figure follows the free visit.
Where are you?
Dragon Mart Complex 2, Shop G-C-22, Warsan First, Dubai International City. We measure across Dubai and the wider UAE.
